Four Score and biometric monitoring

My daughter was born and lives only 30 miles or so from where Abraham Lincoln was born almost 200 years ago. It seems every state that the man stepped foot in attempts to take some credit for his greatness, but the fact is that he was born in a small cabin in rural central Kentucky to two uneducated farmers.

Today was an interesting day. Due to our location here in the Pacific Ocean, I was able to watch the complete election and still get to bed by 10:00, so this morning was the same for me as most. I tried not to talk politics at work too much, since others had voted differently on several things and it was not worth interjecting into our day that I "won" on practically every thing/person I voted for.

I was surprised at how some McCain supporters took the news though. Today I saw an American flag flying upside down. It made me almost physically ill. Had I not been at work, I think I might have knocked on their door and told them how incredibly disrespectful and unpatriotic they actually were, after asking what the emergency was.

In other parts of the country, it was certainly much worse. Today I called my daughter (10) in Kentucky to see how she was doing after bruising her wrist yesterday. She grumbled a little, but was otherwise OK. Suddenly I get;

"So you got what you wanted, didn't you?"

"You mean Obama? Yeah, I guess so."

She then asked If I had seen Obama's speech, stating that she liked it -especially that Sasha and Malia would be, "getting that puppy."

Then came the concerns again. Actually it was less concerns than anger. My 10 year-old daughter indignant that kids had been bringing their parents' hate and idiocy to school.

"Like now that Obama's president all the white people are going to have tracking devices implanted in them."

It's considered impolite to scream, "WTF?!!!" into your daughter's ear over the phone, so I refrained. That's certainly is what was resonating in my head though. How do people get duped into such ridiculous obvious steaming piles of bulls**t?

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

145 years after those words, and 232 years after Thomas Jefferson first penned, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness," rural Kentuckians are still prone to ignorance, racism, bigotry, and stupidity. But there is evidence that from the depths of dumbness greatness can emerge. It will be a long, uphill fight, but there is still hope for my daughter.



*As an aside, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Abraham Lincoln, all well respected American icons. All Atheists, or at the very least, admittedly not Christian.

  • Congrats on "winning" - I wonder what else you voted for?? (Tacky to ask??)
    I must make a confession. I have had two upside down American flags flying, one in my bedroom ( a small one) and one (HAHA) on my myspace page!! I realize neither of these make the same statement as flying one in my front yard would, but all the same for the last 2 or 3 years I have felt like this country was seriously IN DISTRESS and this was one of the ways I expressed it. But on November 4th I did take down both of them. I guess I'm not a true patriot. Fooey.
    Thankfully, even here smack dab in McCain's redstate I haven't been subjected to any extremely sore losers. But I have receive alot of tongue in cheek humor via text message. Everyone seems to have an opinion one whether or not the race war is dead in America. I don't think it's over, but I think we have made a serious stride.
    A friend and I were having a conversation yesterday about religion being tied to every really crazy thing that's been done in history. Like folks know.."OK - No one is ever going to be down with this, but if we say God wants it to be done....there ya go..."
    I love agnostics. So much.

  • I can understand people feeling that the country is/was "in distress."

    It is partially due to my many years in scouting, the military, etc. that I take my pride in the flag very seriously. You will never see me wearing a flag t-shirt or using it as a casual decoration. I have folded many, many, flags at funerals. More than I care to remember. Hearing just the first few notes of "taps" makes my eyes water, no matter where I am - even during movies.

    My grandfather used to walk outside every morning and raise his flag, and return every evening to take it down before dark. I wince when I see flags out all night without being lit, whipping themselves to shreds in storm winds, or abandoned and weathered on poles in the appearance that they have been forgotten.

    There is a code of etiquette for the US Flag, and with each passing generation people seem to care and even know of it less and less.

    Section 8a. "The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."

    Even when America is at it's worst, it is still the best country on earth, IMO. I will always display my flag proudly, because I love this country. I may not always agree with it, but I was born here with the right to disagree without being persecuted, and I am free to do everything within sound morals to go about rallying America to correct it. It is because America has such an amazing foundation that people like Obama have the capability to rise up and change our course. Whether you feel America is at it's lowest and sinking, or clawing its way back to the top, it is built on the strongest base available; freedom.

    Nah, really. Good points. I'll think 2x next time I get the urge. Which will hopefully be a really long time from now.
